The Future
The Working Group sees the preliminary report as just the start of a long process, which we hope will eventually secure the future of Lea Castle for the next generations. We are aware that a major fundraising effort will be required but based on public support for the project to date we believe that this will be successful. We are also aware that we need to address the issues of access to the site and the long-term custodianship of the castle. We believe, however, that the rewards for this effort can be immense, both in terms of tourism development, but also in terms of what will be learned about the history of the castle and the surrounding area and our group look forward to working on the project for many years to come.
In May 2015 the project was granted an additional €6000 by the Heritage Council for the implementation of some of the issues raised in the conservation report. Primarily the funds will be used to trim the ivy on certain parts of the castle to alleviate the strain on the walls. We understand this will need to be regularly maintained and further funds will be needed to make sure this happens. Click on the ‘donate’ tab above to see how you can help.
